St. George [St. George, Utah] April 1 1888 [Sunday 1 Apr 1888]

Dear Daughters Flora [Florence Snow Woolley, b. 1856] and Georga [Georgiana Snow Thatcher, b. 1862]

I was much pleased yesterday [Saturday 30 Mar 1888] to receive your letter and learn how you and the children were getting along.  I had been wishing for some time I could hear from you and the children.  I am glad they have nothing worse than the chicken pox   there has a number of children died of the measles but I do not think it is spreading    Libby [Elizabeth Ashby Snow Ivins, b. 1854] was down a while ago and I have put up the things Georga sent for.  I am real well.  Saby [?] and I do all the washing and we get along first rate.  I work out in the garden nearly all the time   I have set out lots of flowers on the south side of the house and they are growing nisely [nicely], if the hot wether [weather] does not kill them   I have holy ocks [hollyhocks] all along by the east fence besides poplar trees and pomgranites [pomegranates]    have sown the lawn grass and got the hose fixed so I can water it and it is beginning to come up   I have had all those pear trees cut down and some good fruit grafted into them and they seem to be doing well   Clare [Clarence Snow, b. 1874] has grafted the rose bushes and I think some of them are growing   the wether [weather] has been quite cool for this time of year but we have some things up but the birds take our peas as fast as they come up and I am going to put in another patch this week   I am going to have a garden if work will make it   you cannot think how nice the place looks.  Florence [Florence Ivins, b. 1885] told the folks at the table the other day that Gramma [Elizabeth Rebecca Ashby Snow, b. 1831] had painted her backhouse   Tone [Anthony Woodward Ivins, b. 1852] pretended not to hear and her mother [Elizabeth Ashby Snow Ivins, b. 1854] hushed her up    Ashby [Ashby Snow, b. 1867] and Martie [Martha Ellen Snow Keate, b. 1865] expected to be gone three weeks but I shall not look for them under four   the Marshals [US Marshals] are here every few days and manage to pick up a few that are not smart enough to keep out of the way   they do not stop with me  I think Armitrony [?] is ashamed to come   McGeary inquired of Clare [Clarence Snow, b. 1874] if I would take thm when he first came but I had a houseful of drummers and they have not tried since i [I] suppose Libby [Elizabeth Ashby Snow Ivins, b. 1854] has written all the news   i [I] was going to send you Pa's [Erastus Snow, b. 1818] last letter but I cannot find it so will tell you all he says about Mecico [Mexico]   I wrote dream I had the

morning the marshals [US marshals] got Dr. Higgins   I suppose I dreamed it while the [they] were raiding the town and I did not know they were here   I heard the clock strike twelve [12] and went to sleep and dreamed Pa and I were all ready to start for Mexico   had my things on just waiting for Georgya [Georgiana Snow Thatcher, b. 1862] to make us a cup of tea   we were in the dining room   I saw a man coming up through the garden and we learned that he was an apostate and his name was Carl so Pa wrote we could not wait in St. George for the cup of tea but let Gerogya [Georgiana Snow Thatcher, b. 1862] make it in Mexico

Well some drum men have just drove up and I must close   Kiss the babys [babies] for me every day   I want to see them so much.   Your loving mother  E R Snow [Elizabeth Rebecca Ashby Snow, b. 1831]

it is now eleven o'Clock [11:00 PM], but I will try to write a few more lines.  I have a letter from your Father tonight in witch [which] he tells me Tone [Anthony Woodward Ivins 1852-1934] is called on a mission to Mexico to study law but he is to take his own time to settle up his affairs and take his family   Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] and Brother Thatcher [Elder Moses Thatcher 1842-1909] go in May [May 1888], expect to go by California   Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] says he expect to tell in his next letter when I and some of my girls are to go   I should not consider if we all landed there yet   he says he has sent means to Brother Romney [Miles Park Romney 1843-1904] to buy Oils Paints Glass to fix up the house and has bought Fruit trees vines Flowers seeds bulbs   they have already arrived there and Bro Bloomfield is taking care of them

Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] says not to let Libby [Elizabeth Ashby Snow Ivins 1854-1936] fret for if he goes at all it will note be very soon so dont [don't] say much about it until [until] you hear more   well my head aches and I must go to bed   Kiss all the babys [babies] for me.

                                                           Good night

You did not tell us wether [whether] you have your house paper or not   I am going to paper my Kitchen but I shall not try to clean hous4e until Martie [Martha Ellen Snow Keate 1865-1949] comes home   Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] says Suse [Susan Snow Young, b. 1856] has moved into Bro Youngs [Brother Brigham Young Jr. ?] old school house and Arthur [Arthur Eugene Snow 1870-1953] is going to live with her and do her chores for his board and lodging   that will save Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] four dollars [$4.00] a week   Josephine [Josephine Snow Tanner 1859-1940] and Martie [Martha Ellen Snow Keate 1865-1949] were there at Aunt Haddies [Harriet Maria Ashby 1834-1921]

[Written in margins]

Molly not at home just now   Pa [Erastus Snow 1818-1888] says he did not know wether [whether] Josephine [Josephine Snow Tanner 1859-1940] would come home with Martie [Martha Ellen Snow Keate 1865-1949] or not   the Marshals [US Marshalls] are determined to get everybody in St. George   some of our people are very careless [?]
