My dear Elisabeth [Elizabeth Rebecca Ashby Snow, b. 1831] your welcome letter of the 9 th inst [instant – Thursday 9 Jul 1885] arrived today. Only 10 days. Perused it with eagerness and seat myself to answer it. I much regret to learn of your poor health, weak eyes, etc, which however I feard [feared] would be the result of the summer heat if you remained in St George [St. George, Utah]. I hope to hear of your take [taking] the buggy and one or more of the children and go and stop a few weeks with Flora [Florence Snow Woolley, b. 1856] and Missia [Artimesia Snow Woolley Seegmiller, b. 1849] at Upper Kanab [Kanab, Utah] or else hich [hitch] onto the Hack and take a load. If you don’t feel to do that take [a] trip to Pine Valley [Pine Valley, Utah] and make a long visit with our kindred there and sister Whipple. You will see above our address is changed. This is the house rented by Elder H. Pratt [Helaman Pratt] for his family and the Missionary Head Quarters, four large rooms and one small bedroom besides kitchen and outhouse all on 2nd floor. We all make this our home now. We are traveling with letters from Prest Diaz [President Porfirio Diaz, President of Mexico] visiting the central states of the Republic. I wrote you in reply to your first, about ten days ago [Thursday 9 Jul 1885] and only a few days since wrote a long Historical letter from the state of Puebla to George Albert [George Albert Snow, b. 1863] with a requst [request] for him to forward it to Moroni [Moroni Snow, b. 1858] for the perusal of folks at home and to be by him kept together with my letters to Edmond and E.B. [Erastus Beman Snow, b. 1853] as I wish my letters including those to yourself preserved for future use as they will be the only Journal of my travels and doings on this trip. Elder John W. Taylor is keeping a Journal as well as Brigham Young [Brigham Young Jr.], but they [may] not be accessable [accessible] to my children.
The very night I wrote George Albert[George Albert Snow, b. 1863], an Irish and Mexican row in our hotel over a Mexican woman in which swords and other weapons were freely brandished and many threats made and boisterous demonstrations made, Police called in and much had liquor, which however after a couple of hours ended without bloodshed, but as it was close to our rooms and our not then fully understanding the cause, kept us in anxious suspense and I was so long up and exposed undressed and bare feet, I took cold, which together with too much walking during the two previous days, brought on fever, back and headache, and the pains in my kidneys, ureters, and swellings which troubled me so much two or three years ago [1882 and 1883]. Next day I was under the necessity of taking Frank [Franklin Richards Snow, b. 1854] and returning to this place where he has nursed me up and with hot baths, physic, and application of hot flannels, I am again feeling quite myself again, though a few days more quiet will be necessary before the effects will disappear We expect to visit the camps of the saints in the State of Chihuahua [Chihuahua, Mexico] about the first of August [Saturday 1 Aug 1885] and I wish you to reply to this immediately addressed to the city of Chihuahua [Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico] capital of that State [Chihuahua, Mexico] on the Mexican Central [railroad], so I can get it on our return from the Casas Grandes [Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico – see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casas_Grandes].
