- This class will continue the discussion of compiled sources and talk about how to incorporate the data into your PAF database.
- Spiritual thought
CLEANING UP NAMES IN YOUR DATABASE
- Names should be entered so there are slashes // around the surname only
- Reason is that the computer is programmed to use the name inside the slashes for alphabetizing, searching, checking, etc.
- Only way to find and correct these is by looking at the Individual List and find and correct them
- Examples
ILLUSTRATIONS OF USING DATA IN NOTES AND SOURCES
- Some databases are programmed to bring in the data and add it to notes or sources automatically, e.g. a GEDCOM from the US 1880 Census on http://www.familysearch.org
- For data from othr websites you can copy and paste the text into notes and/or sources in PAF
- For images you need an image file -- some image formats are jpg, tif, png, and bmp
- Examples of data from HeritageQuest Online -- website accessible from home with a local public library card, e.g. a Nauvoo Public Library card validated at the Quincy Public Library -- has images of all US Censuses (and indexes of most of them), many genealogy books, Revolutionary War Records and Pensions, and more
FASTSTONE CAPTURE
- Screen capture program with many helpful features -- Version 5.3 is the last freeware version; later versions are shareware
- Download from http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/mmedia/FastStoneCapture.html
- Using FastStone Capture
- Settings
- Can use it to capture entire window, active window, rectangular region, or free-hand region
- Will even do scrolling screens where you have to scroll down to see the entire page -- Most screen capture programs won't do this.
- Can set it to save in the type of image you want, e.g. save as a jpg, tif, pdf, or gif
- Can set it to save image to clipboard, in a particular folder, or to image editor
- Can set it to name the screenshots automatically in sequence and with current date in file name or to ask you to name each screenshot before saving it
- Easy to use FastStone Capture to make screenshots for genealogy data, or for slideshows for classes, lectures, family history, etc.
