My Dear Son Ashby [Ashby Snow, b. 1867]


We left Juarez [Ciudad Juarez, Mexico] on the 17 [Friday 17 Sep 1886] on our way to the city of Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico] we arrived here on Monday morning [20 Sep 1886] after three days travel with teams and part of a night by rail this is a Mexican City but a great many Americans here there is [are] some very nice stores with American speaking Clerks your Father [Erastus Snow, b. 1818] has been quite busy doing business in trying to locate a town we are staying at the Robinson house we expect to leave in the morning [Wednesday 29 Sep 1886] for Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico] your Father received a few lines from Joseph [Joseph Smith Snow, b. 1873] this morning he mentions your having gone to Provo but that Martie [Martha Ellen Snow, b. 1865] was still at home


I was glad to learn that you were there and hope you have found a good boarding place where you will feel at home and have good nourishing food I want you to write as soon as you resieve [receive] this [to] tell me where you are boarding how much you have to pay and what studies you are taking and everything you can think of for the least thing will be interesting to me tell me who your intimate friends and companions are is Johony MaQuary [Johnny McQuary] there try and be as prudend [prudent] as you can be with what means you have for your education a little amusement will do but not too much to interfere with your studeis [studies] take good care of your clothes and when they need mending have some one do it for you if Martie [Martha Ellen Snow, b. 1865] is not there to take care of them for you I have not yet learned where she has decided to go but hope she will go to Provo well I suppose you will think I am reading you quite a lecture but it is because I wish to see you become a good and useful man which I believe you will do not forget to pray that the Lord will keep you from all temptation I do not know when we shall start for home perhaps Arthur [Arthur Eugene Snow, b. 1870] will go soon after we return from Mexico which will be about the Middle of October [Friday 15 Oct 1886] now be sure and write as soon as you reseive [receive] this direct to Erastus Snow [Erastus Snow, b. 1818]
